Black Panther Star Unable to Get Tickets For Opening Night
Tickets for Marvel’s Black Panther are in so much demand that even one of the film’s stars, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, had trouble buying any.
Pre-sales for director Ryan Coogler’s film outpaced those of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War the first 24 hours of release, to become the bestselling entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nyong’o, who stars as Nakia, one of King T’Challa’s bodyguards, attempted to purchase tickets for the film’s opening night, but walked away empty-handed because of the high volume of sales.
She recounted her disappoint in a video she posted on Twitter. “It’s Jan. 9, and yesterday the Black Panther tickets went on sale,” Nyong’o said. “I put it on my social media, I was so excited — ‘Get your tickets now! — and then it occurred to me that I should get my tickets too so I can be there when the movie hits theaters and I can experience it with everybody. Fifteen minutes later — I kid you not, 15 minutes later — I was trying to purchase tickets and they were sold out. Sold out!”
The ticket-buying frenzy is only the latest aspect to the excitement surrounding Black Panther. When the film’s cast was announced in 2016, the film became one of the top trending topics on Twitter. Most recently, it’s been announced that Kendrick Lamar and TDE are producing the film’s soundtrack with the soundtrack’s title song, “All the Stars,” out now.
Directed by Ryan Coogler from a script he co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole, Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, and Forest Whitaker as Zuri. The film opens Feb. 16.
