Marvel Characters In Avengers 4 Who Are Skipping Infinity War

Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War is being billed as the biggest crossover event in cinematic history, but there are a few characters that will be skipping this year’s team-up event for next year’s Avengers 4. The Russo Brothers are also directing 2019’s sequel – based on a script from Captain America and Avengers 3 scribes Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely – but Avengers 4 is no longer the second part of Infinity War‘s story. Instead, it’s a proper sequel with its own story.

It’s already been confirmed that the core Avengers team, including Hawkeye, will be in Infinity War alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy, not to mention Thanos and his loyal Black Order. Moreover, several supporting characters from various Marvel Cinematic Universe movies will also make appearances in Avengers 3. But what does that mean for other heroes such as Captain Marvel and the Wasp? Well, thanks to multiple set photos and various confirmations from cast and crew members, a number of major characters are slated to appear in 2019’s Avengers film but are skipping Thanos’ initial arrival this year.

The biggest character that’s appearing in Avengers 4 but not Avengers: Infinity War is Captain Marvel. Brie Larson is making her official debut as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Captain Marvel film in 2019, and then she’ll be reprising her role in Avengers 4. She was originally supposed to appear in Avengers 3 (thus providing her introduction similarly to Spider-Man and Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War), as was confirmed by the Russo Brothers during the Infinity War set visit last summer, but plans changed down the line and now she’s no longer starring in the film.

Another character confirmed for Avengers 4 that’s surprisingly skipping Infinity War is Hope van Dyne/The Wasp, played by Evangeline Lilly. The actress made her debut as Hope in Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man in 2015, and she will officially become the Wasp in the film’s sequel, due out in theaters this summer: Ant-Man and The Wasp. Since the studio and that film’s creative team are saving her introduction for Ant-Man 2, she won’t be appearing in Infinity War. And, unfortunately, Lilly mentioned that Wasp only has a small role in Avengers 4, so audiences shouldn’t expect her to have a big part.

Other characters confirmed to appear but haven’t been explicitly confirmed are Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), and Harley Keener (Ty Simpkins). Jackson and Smulders’ characters were recently seen shooting scenes as their MCU characters, and it was quickly believed that they were on the set of Avengers 4. While it’s possible they could’ve been filming scenes for Captain Marvel, there are too many reasons why that’s not the case. As for Simpkins, it was recently reported that he would be reprising his Iron Man 3 role in Avengers 4, perhaps to bring Tony’s story full circle.
