Daredevil Season 3 Casts Matt Murdock’s Mother
Marvel’s Daredevil danced around the subject of Matt Murdock’s mother in its first two seasons. All we know from flashbacks is that she wasn’t in the picture for his childhood, and shortly before his death Matt’s father Jack made a call to her hoping she’d pick up. But viewers will finally meet her in the upcoming third season of the Netflix drama.
Deadline reports that Joanne Whaley, best known for her role on Starz’s historical drama The White Princess, has been cast as Maggie.
The character’s introduction shouldn’t come as a surprise, given the final moments of The Defenders. Although his friends believed him dead, buried beneath tons of rubble following the implosion of Midland Circle, in the last scene of the miniseries, Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock awakens, injured but alive, in a sparse room, where a watchful nun says, “Get Maggie. Tell her he’s awake.” Marvel Comics fans immediately recognized the sequence from “Born Again,” the seminal 1986 storyline by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, in which Murdock’s reputation is ruined and his life dismantled by Wilson Fisk, who learns his identity as Daredevil. Badly injured, Murdock is found by his estranged mother Maggie, now a nun, who nurses him back to health at a local church.
Whaley will join the cast as a series regular. Daredevil stars Charlie Cox, Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll, Vincent D’Onofrio and Rosario Dawson.
