Lara Croft is a Dangerous Woman in Tomb Raider TV Spot

The new Tomb Raider movie is set to hit theaters in March, which means the marketing blitz for the film is basically under way, as evidenced by the new TV spot released by Warner Bros. Aside from a poster mishap in which it appeared as though star Alicia Vikander was approximately 80 percent neck, the feature film reboot has offered up a new adventure that looks remarkably like the video game reboot from 2013. That should at the very least earn this effort some points for attempting to give fans what they want to see.

Still, it remains to be seen whether or not the new film directed by Roar Uthaug will break the video game curse, or if Vikander’s time as Lara Croft will be another adaptation that falls short critically and financially. To the film’s credit, it would seem as though Uthaug and his cast have gone all out to deliver on the action aspect of the game, pitting Lara against a group of baddies — headed up by Justified star Walton Goggins —and the worst mother nature can throw at the intrepid raider of tombs. The combination, then, promises what looks to be a fairly lively adventure that puts Croft in the driver’s seat uncovering what her father assures her puts “our world in danger.”

That is about as much as the new TV spot has to offer, as it doesn’t really deliver much more than what the first two trailers already detailed, but it does switch the tempo up a little bit and alter the focus so as to underline the idea Lara’s not just doing this because she needs to; she also seems eager to have “an adventure.”

That certainly paints the film as being a lot more fun than it might otherwise have been were Lara to have been positioned as yet another reluctant hero or one burdened by the grief or guilt. And who knows, perhaps that will be part of Vikander’s reimagining of the hero, but as far as this brief spot is concerned, the adventurous Ms. Croft is partially in this for the thrill of it.

So far, the rest of the movie seems to be following that line of thinking as well. With plenty of big stunts and action set pieces, as well as Nick Frost as an arms dealer responsible for Lara’s twin handguns, the new Tomb Raider looks like it’s all about having fun first. That’s not a bad way to position the third film adapted from a video game franchise that began all the way back in 1996.
