Avengers: Infinity War Will Have A Lot of Deleted Scenes

Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo reveal that the film has a lot of deleted scenes. The 19th film installment in the famed Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers 3 gathers almost all key players populating the franchise as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes gear up for their most dangerous foe yet, Thanos. The epic blockbuster also sets up the stage for the film series’ Phase 3 capper, the still-untitled Avengers 4, which is due next year.

The upcoming flick is the third MCU film by the Russos following their incredible work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Reteaming with veteran Marvel writers Stephen Markus and Christopher McFeely, Infinity War is arguably very different from the team’s past collaborations in a sense that this begins to wrap up 10 years’ worth of narratives for the famed franchise. Given that the dream squad has worked with each other for a couple of times now, one would assume that they would’ve established their approach to their work and sticking to it in this one. But Joe and Anthony decided to change their scheme by allowing their actors to explore different ways on how they want to shoot their scenes rather than strictly adhering to the script.

Speaking with Digital Spy during the London leg of Infinity War‘s global press tour, the directing duo spoke about their approach to filming the Marvel epic blockbuster, surprisingly revealing that they allowed as much improvisation from the actors as they could. Given this, they’ve collected a lot of deleted scenes which will end up as bonuses in the imminent home entertainment release of the flick.

“We were very tight with the scripts on Winter Soldier and Civil War, so there weren’t a lot of extras. This is a very big movie with a lot of characters in it, and we played around with a lot of improvisation, because we had new chemistry that we were defining between characters.

“It was the first time ever that all these characters were on screen together, so we played around with quite a bit of footage, and I think there will be some good stuff for the DVD.”

It’s an interesting choice for the Russos to actually leave a lot of room for improvisation considering the scale of the film. Not only will it take more time filming with actors trying different variations of scenes, it’s also a lot more work for everyone involved and costly given that the longer they shoot, the budget also tends to grow. Nevertheless, the directors giving their actors the creative freedom to approach their characters will be very helpful in terms of making sure that the heroes’ characterizations are consistent (something that the MCU is known for) as most of them have been playing their superhero roles for quite some time now. This is especially important for several cast members that they haven’t worked with like Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy – all of which are supposed to play pivotal roles in the film.

Collaborating with the massive cast is one thing, but the Russos also reached out to other Marvel Studios directors, particularly Ryan Coogler and Taika Waititi, who directed Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok respectively, to ensure that their narratives check in on each others’ films as they were all working almost at the same time. Meanwhile, James Gunn even helped in writing some of the lines for Guardians of the Galaxy, on top of executive producing the project. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait very long to find out if Marvel Studios pull this unprecedented movie event off as Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters next week.
