James Gunn Wrote Infinity War Dialogue For The Guardians
James Gunn wrote lines for the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Infinity War, Dave Bautista reveals. While fans are arguably excited to see the official arrival of the galactic supervillain, Thanos, the forthcoming Marvel film’s main draw lies on the impending interactions among all the heroes in the MCU, particularly with the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes meeting their cosmic counterparts for the first time. Joe and Anthony Russo may be the directors of the ensemble flick, but the duo had help from other MCU directors in bringing the film to life.
Last year, Bautista candidly shared that he was initially worried about the Russos taking reigns on the Guardians. Before Infinity War, only Gunn has utilized the band of cosmic heroes on the big screen, having directed and even co-written both headlining films for the characters. So relinquishing helming duties to brand new directors was understandably difficult for the actor. But upon working under the tutelage of Joe and Anthony, Bautista was relieved knowing that the duo doesn’t only let them be as they are, they’re also highly collaborative.
Over the weekend, Bautista appeared at Awesome Con, and given that he can’t talk anything about plot details from the forthcoming MCU film/s, he, instead, shared more information (via SuperBroMovies) regarding his experience filming Infinity War (and presumably also Avengers 4). This includes the reveal that Gunn lent a helping hand regarding writing lines for him and his co-Guardians. The actor didn’t get into any specifics, but it makes sense that Gunn helped in portraying his characters, especially when it comes to them speaking with other MCU characters to make for organic interactions. Further, since the twin Avengers films will be the springboard to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which Gunn will helm and write, it makes sense that he’s involved with how Star-Lord and company will be utilized.

It’s no secret that the Russos have coordinated with other MCU directors to make sure that Infinity War is consistent with characterizations, especially when they’re working with several dozens of them with various histories and quirks. While the directing duo was able to work with a significant amount of talent in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, there are still a handful of other key players that they have yet to use such as the Guardians, Doctor Strange, Hulk, and Thor – all of which will play pivotal parts in the film’s overall narrative. Chris Hemsworth, for instance, was admittedly concerned about what version of the God of Thunder will pop in Avengers 3 considering that Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok changed the Asgardian King’s personality quite a bit by making him more fun and less cranky.
Meanwhile, although they were the ones who introduced Black Panther and Spider-Man via Civil War, both heroes have gone on different personal journeys ever since they got mixed up in Tony Stark’s and Steve Rogers’ conflict. Parker had learned to take his time learning the ropes of being a superhero in Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming, while T’Challa had dealt with the sins of the past, making him a more prepared Wakandan king and protector in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther. The Russos have to incorporate these personal story arcs in Avengers: Infinity War to ensure that the movie doesn’t have loopholes in characterization for an impressive serialized storytelling.
