Kevin Feige Has Already “Had Meetings” About 2025 MCU Films
Marvel Studios just had meetings about their 2024-2025 slate of films, president Kevin Feige says. Avengers 4 may be marketed as the “end,” but the MCU will continue past Phase 3 with a slew of new stories – whether origins, follow-ups, or ensembles – to tell. And while everyone is still reeling from that shocking Avengers: Infinity War ending, Feige and his team are already years ahead of fans when it comes to the franchise’s narrative, proving that they have no plans of slowing down.
Feige is known to have always reiterated that they opt to focus on the task at hand rather than constantly looking at what’s to come. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t have internal discussions about what’s next in their film series – after all, there’s no other film franchise that has had the foresight that the MCU has. So while everyone is busy talking about Infinity War and its much-anticipated sequel coming next year – as well as Ant-Man And The Wasp and Captain Marvel – the company president shared that he and his team have just had conversations about movies to be released seven years from now.
Speaking with the Associated Press, the MCU mastermind talked about the process of building a sustainable franchise that fans have gotten so invested in. And while he likes to claim that their goal is to make the best movie now, he also admitted that there are currently active conversations for films way down the line.
“We’re always thinking ahead. Just when people think they can pin us down, we go somewhere else and that’s going to happen again after ‘Infinity War’ in the build-up to the next Avengers film. And we had meetings earlier today about 2024 and 2025.”
Last year, Feige revealed that they have another 20 films in development after Avengers 4. Given Marvel Studios 3-films-a-year schedule, they would be 16 movies in (including Spider-Man: Homecoming 2) by the time 2025 rolls around. That means that they still have at least another year’s worth of films past what they’ve just discussed. And with the X-Men and Fantastic Four’s entry into the mix on the horizon courtesy of the in-process Disney and Fox deal, there will be no scarcity of stories that the MCU can tell going forward.
Currently, the MCU confirmed docket is only up until next July with Spider-Man: Homecoming’s currently untitled sequel. James Gunn has previously teased about a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for 2020, but that hasn’t been confirmed by the Marvel execs so that’s still tentative. It’s going to be quite a while before people learn anything about the franchise’s mysterious Phase 4, as Feige said that they won’t be announcing anything new until next year, but both Moon Knight and The Eternals films seem likely to be included in the plan. Whether it’ll be revealed through a panel in SDCC Hall H (a great way to return after skipping this year), or via their own press event – similar to how they launched their Phase 3 slate back in 2014 – is unknown, but everyone will be on the lookout.
The MCU may move forward, but it will definitely look different than what it looks like right now. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 are set to change the franchise’s long-running status quo with the possible permanent deaths of some of its most iconic heroes. While they will be missed, it’s essential to keep the series fresh and interesting – something that it needs to be if Feige plans to continue doing films for another decade.
