Michael C. Hall Is Open To A Dexter Reboot

Fans of Showtime’s hit series Dexter may see the dark drama return to the small screen after all. The show’s titular star, Michael C. Hall may be on to other series at the moment, but in a recent interview the actor opened up about never saying never about bringing his serial killer back to television.

Dexter, the Showtime series based on the series of book series by Jeff Lindsay, details the life of Dexter Morgan, a Miami police blood splatter expert by day and a serial killer by night. Dexter himself follows the Code of Harry — a series of criteria his step-father once created for him — to ensure he’s only killing the worst kind of criminal. The series, which last eight seasons and ran from 2006 to 2013 was a massive hit amongst critics and fans alike. The series earned Showtime multiple Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG nominations as well as countless others for a stellar cast that included Hall as well as Jennifer Carpenter, James Remar, David Zayas, Lauren Vélez, Julie Benz and countless guest stars that included Jon Lithgow, Julia Stiles and Jimmy Smits.

While Hall has moved on to portray many other characters that are widely removed from Dexter Morgan, including The Crown‘s JFK and is currently starring in Netflix’s soon to-air adaptation of Harlan Coben’s book, Safe. The roles Hall has chosen since Dexter went on the air have been on the opposite end of the spectrum of Dexter Morgan, yet the actor isn’t ruling out a return to the character. Speaking with Variety to promote his role in Safe, Hall teased he’d be open to reviving his hit series at some point:

“Maybe. It’s a possibility given how the show ended that we could revisit Dexter. I have just yet to, for my part, imagine or hear someone else’s idea that makes it feel worth doing. But never say never.”

In a television landscape that seems to prove everything old is new again (see: the Roseanne revival scoring huge ratings), the idea of revisiting a beloved character like Dexter would certainly be appealing. The series frequently challenged viewers about their own morality, as audiences felt conflicted about rooting for Dexter, despite the fact he was a serial killer. In addition to intense debates, Dexter featured some of the best acting on television and often drew in big names as guest stars. The series finale was one of the most controversial in history, however, as many were critical of how the show ended. Many thought Dexter would make the ultimate sacrifice to end his own pain and suffering, but instead became a lumberjack.

A return to Dexter would definitely help tie up some loose ends for many fans, including whether Dexter is a lumberjack by day and a serial killer by night, or just a lumberjack now? Or perhaps like how Roseanne managed to bring Dan back from the dead, Deb could still be alive and we could forget all about the mess that was the ending of season 8. While there’s still no word on whether a Dexter reboot will actually ever happen, knowing that Hall would consider it is definitely a promising sign for fans.
