Chris Hemsworth Is In the Secret Crocodile Dundee Movie, Too

Chris Hemsworth will apparently be starring in the upcoming Crocodile Dundee sequel that Danny McBride filmed in secret. Hemsworth, of course, is one of Australia’s most famous film imports in the last decade, instantly attracting attention as George Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot in 2009 and making his smashing debut in the title role in Marvel Studios’ Thor in 2011.

Since then, he’s been spending most of his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in either Avengers or Thor solo films, with an occasional turn in comedies like Ghostbusters or action films like 12 Strong, showing the actor definitely has a life outside of his role as the God of Thunder. Now, judging a short teaser trailer released Monday, it appears that not only is Hemsworth going to give the comedy genre another try, he’s going to do it in a sequel to a film that originated in his native country.

Hemsworth shows up in the new 45-second teaser trailer for Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home, starring McBride as the son of the legendary Crocodile Dundee. It’s the second teaser trailer to appear online since Saturday, for a summer 2018 comedy that McBride apparently filmed in secret. Paul Hogan, of course, made the character famous in the 1986 comedy hit Crocodile Dundee about an Aussie crocodile poacher (Hogan) invited to New York City by Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski), an American reporter. The film spawned two sequels — Crocodile Dundee II in 1988 and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles in 2001.

Even though Dundee had a young son, Mikey (Serge Cockburn), in the 2001 film, McBride appears to be playing a different son of the Hogan character named Brian. The first teaser for the most part features McBride giving his take on Hogan’s classic “That’s not a knife — that’s a knife” line in the original film, and the new teaser featuring Hemsworth is just as ambiguous. In the teaser, Hemsworth appears to be playing a chauffeur, as he’s holding up a “Dundee” sign in a desolate Australian location as Brian gets off a bus with luggage. Hemsworth has very little dialogue in the teaser, only saying, “Brian Dundee?” and replying “Really?” to everything else Brian says.

It will be interesting to see if Hemsworth’s appearance in the Crocodile Dundee sequel will be just a cameo or a full-fledged role. It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that Hemsworth is in the film, given that Hogan made Dundee a beloved character in both the U.S. and Australia. But before people get too hyped, somehow it needs to be officially confirmed that Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns is a real film or fake trailers cooked up for entertainment, a la the brilliant faux trailers in Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder (which co-starred McBride). Hogan in a recent People magazine article certainly made it sound like the project was legitimate.

Until then, Crocodile Dundee fans will just have to sit back and enjoy the rebirth of the franchise, even if it is short-lived in the form of fake movie spots. Who knows? If McBride and Hogan are ambitious enough, they can get Aussie stars like Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe to appear in some The Son of a Legend Returns teasers, too.
