Pepper Potts May Have Powers In Avengers: Infinity War
Avengers: Infinity War will feature all hands on deck when Thanos and his army come to Earth, and that may mean Pepper Potts will regain her one-time powers. Pepper Potts has had quite the journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe already. From being Tony Stark’s assistant to becoming the CEO of his company, she’s been an integral part of his life, just like in the comics. And while she’s been missing from a number of recent MCU films and she and Tony were “taking a break” in Captain America: Civil War, Miss Potts will soon be back on the big screen proper.
Although Spider-Man: Homecoming wasn’t a full-blown Iron Man film, it did reveal at the end that Tony and Pepper have rekindled their relationship post-Civil War. Even better, it picked up on the thread of Tony asking Pepper to marry him. Interestingly, the Avengers: Infinity War tie-in comic shows that Tony Stark will be alone at the start of the movie, as his allies have gone their separate ways. Whether that includes Pepper too is unknown right now, but she and Happy will both be back by Tony’s side at some point during the film. Pepper may even have the powers that she gained in Iron Man 3, at that.
Iron Man 3‘s climax featured Pepper gaining a wide range of abilities thanks to the Extremis virus, allowing her to swoop in a save Tony in a truly super-heroic fashion. The film ended with her supposedly having been cured of the virus, but could her powers return somehow? This was the very question on Stephen Colbert’s mind last night when Gwyneth Paltrow visited him on The Late Show:
Colbert: “Is there any chance, at any point, when you were working on the movie, did you thrust your hand toward someone wearing a blue suit with ping pong balls on it?”
Paltrow: “Yes.”
Colbert: “Then you still have powers.”
Obviously, this is hardly confirmation that Pepper will have powers or even regain her old ones. Still, it is intriguing to learn that she was doing motion capture work. Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this. Last month, Paltrow teased her own Iron Man suit in Avengers 4 via a shot of her in a motion capture outfit. In the comics, Pepper (as with most people in Tony’s life) has worn her own armor, but like her powers in the MCU it didn’t last long. However, the conceit of Iron Man in general certainly begs the question: why doesn’t Tony give everyone he cares about armor?
Tony Stark had no training whatsoever to be able to pilot the suit he built, yet it didn’t take him much time to learn. Given that no special skills are required to control the various armors, as they all have an AI and plenty of safeguards, it makes sense for Tony to give one to Pepper. She’s proven capable of holding her own when given powers, so it’s hardly a leap to think that the next two Avengers movies will offer Pepper a way to protect herself and perhaps even join the battle against Thanos.
Whether Pepper gains new powers, gets her old ones back, or finally receives her own armor, it will be exciting seeing the character able to join in the fight in Infinity War. And considering the power that the Mad Titan will be wielding, the heroes of Earth could certainly use the help.
