Steven S. DeKnight Shows Interest In Directing Man of Steel 2
With the DC Extended Universe hoping to fly to glory with Man of Steel 2, former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight is the latest to show an eagerness to sit in the directors’ chair.
The first Man of Steel kickstarted what would become Warner Bros.’ own superhero shared universe. Zack Snyder stuck Henry Cavill in Superman’s iconic suit and gave us a gritty origin story that charted the fall of Krypton and the rise of the Clark Kent/Superman as Earth’s protector. Featuring stars like Russel Crowe, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, and Laurence Fishburne, Man of Steel went on to be a financial success despite its mixed reviews. There have been talks of a second movie since the first hit theaters, and DC’s recently reshuffled slate seems to confirm that our wish has come true. However, with Snyder seemingly out, who could be next?
Taking to Twitter, one fan asked the Pacific Rim Uprising director if he fancied trying his hand at Man of Steel 2. The answer to this one is an unequivocal yes:
It would be many directors’ dream job to chart the next chapter for Kal-El, and DeKnight certainly has the credentials. Starting back with the likes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, DeKnight then moved on to the likes of Starz’s Spartacus. However, most importantly, he had a hand in the Superman prequel show Smallville. Being no stranger to the world of Kryptonians – and having worked so closely with the character before – DeKnight could be the right kind of talent to bring Man of Steel 2 to life.
With the DCEU seemingly veering away from the tone Snyder’s first entry, Man of Steel 2 might be on a lighter side of the character than we’ve seen so far, but with both Smallville and Daredevil, DeKnight has shown that compelling superhero stories can exist in both tones. That doesn’t mean it’ll veer too far into the sunshine, though. We have already seen what happens when the DCEU tries to go too comedic thanks to Justice League, but Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman shows how a careful balance of light and dark can suit the world of DC hero movies. DeKnight’s work on Daredevil may be the best barometer, though, as it is a great representation of how a stereotypically macabre character can have a splash of color.
Mark Millar revealed that he and Matthew Vaughn once toyed with the idea of Man of Steel 2, but with the duo seemingly out, the race is wide open to see who is next. There is still no word on who the DCEU bosses have in mind for the sequel, but with rumors that we could next see Superman in Shazam!, it could neatly lead into Man of Steel 2. Either way, with Superman back from his brief dirt nap following Batman v Superman, it looks like the Metropolis Marvel is ready to take to the skies with someone new at the helm and another exciting installment for the underpants-wearing (or not) superhero.
