Agents of SHIELD Season 5: Dove Cameron’s Role Revealed

ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 added Dove Cameron in a mysterious role, but now Marvel reveals who she’ll play and a first look photo. Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team of agents have gone on a number of different adventures over the seasons of the Marvel superhero show. However, perhaps their greatest adventure arrived in season 5 when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. traveled to the future, to a time after the Earth has been destroyed – supposedly by Daisy (Chloe Bennet) – and the team is tasked with saving humanity. To make matters more complicated, the remaining humans have been subjugated by Kree, ruled over by Kasius (Dominic Rains).

In more recent episodes, Coulson and the team have figured out how they’re going to get home and the pieces are there for how the agents may prevent the Earth from being destroyed – but first they’ll have to battle Kasius for freedom. All this is in service of the agents eventually returning to 2018, and hopefully preventing the end of the world. Now, while we may have known they would return to the present eventually, we’ve got a first look at one of the new characters the agents will meet when they get back to 2018.

It was revealed late last year that Disney Channel star Dove Cameron joined Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5, but details about her role were kept under wraps, as is typical of Marvel projects. Now, EW has revealed a first look image of Cameron’s character, Ruby, “a young woman of cunning intelligence who has a mysterious obsession with Daisy.” EW additionally reveals Ruby is the daughter of General Hale (Catherine Dent), the United States Army officer fans met in the season 5 episode, ‘Rewind’. Take a look at the photo of Cameron as Ruby:

For those who don’t remember General Hale, she was the army officer at the Blue Raven Ridge facility where Fitz was held for six months as he tried to figure out what happened to his friends. Hale was tasked with rounding up the agents left after S.H.I.E.L.D. was overrun by Life-Model Decoys who destroyed the organization’s public image. Of course, since the majority of the agents were taken by Enoch (Joel Stoffer) and sent to the future, Fitz was the only one left. Little is known about Hale, but she did brutally execute two of her subordinates after Fitz escaped – then returned and escaped again with the cryo-freeze capsule and Zephyr One.

The revelation that Cameron’s character is connected to Hale indicates the army general and the Blue Raven Ridge facility will play a larger role in the narrative of season 5 once the agents return to the present. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 has focused on the future timeline, with ‘Rewind’ being the only episode so far that took place in the present. However, there’s still a great deal the agents – and the viewers – don’t know about how the Earth was destroyed, and it’s likely the rest of the season will deal with that mystery. Additionally, it seems the Blue Raven Ridge facility and Hale may have something to do with it.

Of course, it remains to be seen how big of a role Cameron’s character will play in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 once once Coulson and the team return to the present. Certainly, Ruby’s interest in Daisy hints she’ll be able to offer insight into Quake’s role in the Earth being destroyed, but for now that’s merely speculation. In addition to Cameron’s debut and the team returning to the present, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans also have the 100th episode to look forward to as season 5 continues.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 continues Friday February 2 with ‘Past Life’ at 9pm on ABC.
