Supergirl Confirms Another Member of the Legion of Super-Heroes
SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for “Legion of Super-Heroes,” the midseason premiere of Supergirl.
Supergirl just confirmed another member of the Legion of Super-Heroes. In “Legion of Super-Heroes,” the latest episode, Mon-El namedropped Legionnaire Ayla Ranzz, aka Lightning Lass.
Mon-El brought Ayla up while he explained why he and the other Legionnaire’s couldn’t join the fight against Reign. “A thousand years from now, this farming planet Winath goes dark, and our friend Ayla — she’s from there — so she goes to check it out,” he said.
“Winath was a paradise, but Ayla made planetfall and found it –” Imra continued, only for Mon-El to finish for her: “Decimated. It was completely dried out.”
“The creatures that did this, we call them the Blight. They consume everything in their path,” Imra said.
“Brainy found a way to stop them, but they were on us before we could use it,” Mon-El recalled.
“So we hid the information in the safest place we could: our DNA, where it can’t be lost, it can’t be stolen,” Imra added. “It’s written in our genes.”
“So if we die, our DNA never makes it to the future and everything’s lost,” Mon-El concluded.
Mon-El and Imra’s story lines up with Ayla’s comic book origin. Introduced in Adventure Comics #308, Ayla is the twin sister of Garth Ranzz, aka Lightning Lad. The Lightning twins grew up on Winath with their brother Mekt, who went on to become the villain Lightning Lord. Like her siblings, she received her powers after they crashed on the planet Korbal, where a herd of Lightning Beasts imbued them with electricity-based powers. She initially joined the Legion in honor of Garth after he was killed by Zaryan the Conqueror. She has also gone by the moniker Light Lass and displays a variety of abilities, including electrokinesis and energy absorption.
Though Mon-El mentioned her, it is unclear if or when Lightning Lass will take on an active role in the show. Three out of five Legionnaires have been awakened from their hypersleep, which leaves two unknown characters in hibernation. It is possible that Lightning Lass is one of these characters and that she could come into play later on.
Notably, the Blight also originated with the Legion of Super-Heroes. Debuting in Legion of Super-Heroes #122, the Blight is a cybernetic race that accidentally turned themselves into perpetually decaying creatures in their search for immortality. In their quest to spread decay throughout the universe, the Blight encountered the Legion; though they enslaved several Legionnaires, the Legion ultimately overcame them with a little help from the Doda race.
Airing Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as the Girl of Steel, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers and Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, with appearances by Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant and Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.
