The End of Everything is Coming in Agents of SHIELD ‘Past Life’ Trailer

The latest trailer for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. threatens “the end of everything” when the show returns next week with the episode, ‘Past Life’. It’s been a wild ride for Agent Coulson and his team. The stars of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have found themselves stranded in a dystopian future timeline, one in which Earth was shattered like an egg.

In a terrifying twist, it appears one of their own is responsible: Daisy, who has earned herself the name “Quake, Destroyer of Worlds.” Just what happened remains a mystery, but the S.H.I.E.L.D. team seem to have finally found a way home. If the Kree Monolith is reassembled, they can use it to return to their own time.

But is that really such a good move? The latest trailer has teased that one of the team may want to stay in the future. Daisy’s reluctance is understandable. Although she’s no scientist, Daisy knows enough to understand that the team are trapped in a time loop. On the face of it, one simple way to avoid the Earth’s destruction is for Daisy to stay in the future. It’s a simple, elegant solution – and, given Daisy has often had something of a martyr complex, it’s sure to appeal to her.

Of course, she’s failing to factor in her team’s opinions. There’s simply no way Coulson would leave his protege stranded in this horrific timeline, not even with the fate of the world at stake. To Coulson, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team are a family, and he’s not going to abandon a member of his family.

Before S.H.I.E.L.D. can return home, though, they also have to deal with the threat of Kasius. The Kree aristocrat is a dangerous enemy, even if he has just lost his best agent. The last episode revealed that Kasius has a precog of his own, which means he can anticipate S.H.I.E.L.D.’s every move. Scenes in the trailer suggest that Kasius will get the drop on Mack and Yo-Yo, a revelation that’s sure to leave fans concerned. Although flashbacks have shown Yo-Yo was part of the time loop, Mack’s fate is uncertain. In fact, one flashback even mentioned that Mack was “gone,” and it could well be that he’ll die in this cruel future.

Coulson and his team have never faced a challenge like this. They essentially have to save the world twice: once in the future, and once in the present. Fortunately, the time loop was created by the precognitive Robin in order to allow the Earth to be saved. She didn’t just give Agent May the way home, she clued her in on how to save the planet, too. History, it seems, can be rewritten. Daisy fears the end of everything, but thankfully, if the stars of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. make the right choices, that can still be averted.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Fridays @ 9 pm on ABC.
