Tom Cruise Teased Henry Cavill With The Superman Theme Song During M:I-6 Filming

Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg are recalling the fun they had at the expense of co-star Henry Cavill on the set of Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The Mission: Impossible franchise, of course, has long been a part of Cruise’s life, beginning in 1996 with his role as super spy Ethan Hunt in the first big screen adaptation of the classic TV series, and continuing with five additional chapters including the upcoming Fallout this summer.

The franchise has added some memorable actors to Cruise’s troupe along the way, including Ving Rhames as computer hacker Luther Steckell since the first film; Simon Pegg as the hilarious tech expert, Benji Dunn, in 2006’s Mission: Impossible III; and Rebecca Ferguson as former MI6 agent and Hunt’s ally Isla Faust, and Sean Harris as Hunt’s chief nemesis in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. New to the cast for Fallout is Henry Cavill, whose star has risen considerably playing Superman in the DC Extended Universe films Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League.

Naturally, getting the chance to work on one film gives the cast more opportunities to build up their camaraderie with Cruise, which was evident between Cruise and Pegg shooting with Cavill on Fallout. In a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, the duo playfully recalled how they ribbed Cavill during the repetitive process of filming a car chase in Paris. Pegg says:

“It was me, Tom, Sean Harris, Ving Rhames, and Henry … So, it’s very cramped car, particularly with Ving and Henry who are both big guys and me in the middle bombing around Paris, and every time we finish the shot, we have to reset the shot, drive back to the start point so we can do it again.”

Noting that Cavill had enough of sitting in a cramped car, Pegg says he asked if he could run back to the start point. As he was running, Cruise’s vehicle drove alongside the Man of Steel star while Pegg vocalized the John Williams’ iconic Superman theme. “He did the whole thing, the whole way right next to him,” added Cruise, laughing. To top off the story, Cavill says, “One of the coolest moments of my life is having Tom Cruise do that driving right next to you. You know you’ve made it.”

Since Fallout isn’t opening in theaters until July 27, it’s fun getting early word about the film, even though the production is sharing too many details about the plot or Cavill’s character, Reville Smites. During the same appearance on The Graham Norton Show by Cruise, Pegg, Cavill and Ferguson, Cruise even showed footage from several angles of his broken ankle injury, yet doing so in good humor. Whether Cavill will have a laugh about having to keep his Fallout mustache during reshoots for Justice League is yet to be seen, but for the time being, anyway, all seems good on the Mission: Impossible front.
