Rotten Tomatoes Responds to Plot to Tank Black Panther Ratings
Black Panther is poised to release in the upcoming weeks, and a group of angry DC Extended Universe fans are hoping to get the movie off to a shaky start.
Upset about the poor reception to Justice League, this group has claimed there’s a bias in the media when it comes to Marvel Studios. A Facebook event titled “Give Black Panther a Rotten Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes” has been created, but the review aggregate website has now responded in a statement via The Wrap.
A spokesperson for Rotten Tomatoes said: “We at Rotten Tomatoes are proud to have become a platform for passionate fans to debate and discuss entertainment and we take that responsibility seriously. While we respect our fans’ diverse opinions, we do not condone hate speech. Our team of security, network and social experts continue to closely monitor our platforms and any users who engage in such activities will be blocked from our site and their comments removed as quickly as possible.”
This so-called event is set to commence on Feb. 15, the night before Black Panther launches in theaters. The aim of the group is to retaliate against Disney for apparently “paying off the critics that hurt DC Comics on film.” They’re also aiming to hijack the audience score for Avengers: Infinity War, too.
Directed by Ryan Coogler from a script he wrote with Joe Robert Cole, Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Winston Duke as M’Baku and Forest Whitaker as Zuri. The film opens Feb. 16.
