Solo: A Star Wars Story Trailer Finally Coming On Monday
The long-awaited first trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story will likely debut on ABC’s Good Morning America Monday, February 5. Even though the spinoff comes out in less than four months, Lucasfilm has yet to unveil any official marketing materials. While this was probably a deliberate measure on the part of the studio to give The Last Jedi its moment in the spotlight, the lack of any Solo advertising this close to release has caused several people to become concerned the movie is in trouble and could be a bomb for Disney. With Episode VIII now firmly in the rearview mirror, the time has come to shift gears.
There has been no shortage of rumors about when we’ll finally get the Solo teaser, but January came and went without so much as a peep from Lucasfilm. By all accounts, February will be a much different story. Just yesterday, reports indicated the studio would use this weekend’s Super Bowl LII as a launching pad for Solo promotion, and while Disney has yet to confirm anything on that front, it certainly looks like the trailer is right around the corner.
Twitter account Star Wars Explained snagged a screenshot of GMA‘s official ticket request site, which has information about the episode on February 5. As one can see, in addition to the live studio taping, attendees will be treated to the debut of the Solo trailer. GMA has since removed the Solo tease from the listing (they likely jumped the gun before Lucasfilm could announce it themselves), but you can see their earlier post below:
This doesn’t disprove the earlier word about Solo at the Super Bowl. It’s possible Disney will use one of their television spots to hype up the reveal of the full trailer on February 5, offering viewers a brief, 30-second tease of what they can expect. That strategy makes a lot of sense, seeing that the Super Bowl is always one of the most-watched events of the year. Last year’s NFL championship game scored about 111.3 million viewers nationwide, so Lucasfilm is guaranteed a huge audience will be glued in front of their screens watching the New England Patriots take on the Philadelphia Eagles. Some people tune into the Super Bowl just for the ballyhooed commercials, so Solo will be reaching a wide range of moviegoers.
Super Bowl LII looks to have a stacked lineup of movies premiering new footage, including major summer tentpoles Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. However, none will be bigger than the latest Star Wars movie – especially one that’s been under a heavy amount of scrutiny ever since original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired last year. There’s a lot of pressure on the spot and trailer to deliver and put fans’ minds at ease. Hopefully, it doesn’t disappoint and audiences get properly excited about Solo.
