Agents of SHIELD Confirms Which Characters Survive the Apocalypse

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for “The Last Day,” the latest episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“The Last Day,” the latest episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has confirmed that several members of Coulson’s team will survive the Earth’s destruction: Melinda May, Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons and Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez. However, Phil Coulson and Daisy “Quake” Johnson were left unaccounted for and Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie didn’t make it.

The episode boasts several flashbacks to 2022, during and just after the world is blown apart. The first of these flashbacks finds May piloting the Zephyr through a gravity storm, while Simmons tracks their progress to the Lighthouse. A young Robin also appears in the scene and tells them both that they will survive the crash that happens immediately after she speaks.
In another flashback, May discusses the Lighthouse’s life support systems with Fitz and Simmons, confirming that they also survive. What’s more, Fitz wears a wedding ring on his finger, which suggests he and Simmons follow through on their engagement when they return to the past.

Yo-Yo appears in yet another flashback, which takes place on the Lighthouse just before the Kree arrive to “save” them. She and May have a disagreement about how to handle the Kree, with Yo-Yo revealing that “we both know they want to enslave us.” As such, she heads into the freight elevator to face them, despite Robin’s prediction of what would happen. This particular prophecy is never revealed in full, though it is implied that Yo-Yo will die in the act of rebelling.

Before the elevator doors close on her, she also confirms that Mack is dead. “Mack is gone and he’s never coming back,” she reveals.

“The Last Day” plays coy as to whether or not these versions of the characters have experienced the 2091 timeline, but Fitz ultimately confirms that they did. When May insists they keep trying to save the world in another flashback, he snaps. “We’ve tried!” he yells. “For all I know, we’ve tried a thousand times. Always ends the same! It’s like a record that keeps on skipping, and we are repeating this loop again and again and again and again! And every time, Jemma dies. They all die. Robin can’t change it. Voss couldn’t change. Even Daisy couldn’t change it. She saw the aftermath, and she still destroyed the world.”

Per Fitz’s rant, Simmons’ death is also confirmed, though it seems that this happens after they settle into their new lives on the Lighthouse. As such, the episode suggests that Mack, Yo-Yo and Simmons definitely die by the time they settle into the Lighthouse. Coulson is not mentioned at all in any of the flashbacks.

Finally, Daisy gets a glimpse of footage from just before the world was ripped apart. The footage shows her standing outside of the Zephyr, where she appears to argue with someone inside. She then storms off-screen. “That was the last time anyone saw Daisy Johnson alive,” explained Voss, one of Robin’s True Believers. “By all accounts, the city had been evacuated. No one there. After Quake walked in, 12.8 on the rector scale and the world cracked like an egg.”

Of course, the footage could be misleading. Daisy could very well be telling her fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to leave without her, so that she can face down the threat herself. Seeing as Robin told May that Flint is the key to returning home to their proper time, we’ll just have to wait until the agents get back to learn the true circumstances behind Daisy’s disappearance.

Airing Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5 stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Henry Simmons, Ian De Caestecker, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, Elizabeth Henstridge, Nick Blood, Jeff Ward, Eve Harlow, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Coy Stewart.
