Captain Marvel: Samuel L. Jackson Confirms Nick Fury Details

Marvel Studios surprised fans in July by announcing the long-awaited Captain Marvel is actually set in the 1990s. Even more surprising was that the film will bring back Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, who hasn’t been on screen since 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. In a new interview, the actor briefly addresses his return, sans eye patch, and his overall time working with Marvel.

Jackson stressed that Fury we see in the Brie Larson-led film will be very different from the S.H.I.E.L.D. director depicted previously in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For starters, as previously indicated by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Fury will have both eyes. As Jackson explained, Captain Marvel will be more of an origin story, and Fury will come to meet Carol Danvers with “another guy’s face.”

“But we’re going back now, and I meet Captain Marvel in more of an origin story,” he said. “You’ll see Nick Fury with another guy’s face, somebody that’s got two eyes, so that’s a whole big deal. You’ll see. It’s prior to the eye injury, no eye patch.”

The actor also discussed what it’s been like working with Marvel since the beginning of the MCU through a nine-picture deal that ends with Captain Marvel.

“I’m sort of the glue that holds all these guys together,” Jackson said of Fury. “I got them into the organization, into S.H.I.E.L.D., and every now and then I show up to remind them that S.H.I.E.L.D. has a purpose. It’s been a good job. It was a nine-picture deal. I did it. It was good.”

Fans have been eager to see Jackson return following his cameo in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and from the looks of it, outside of a likely appearance in at least one more Avengers film, Captain Marvel may be the last hurrah for Nick Fury.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script by Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve, the film stars Brie Larson in the titular role. Captain Marvel arrives March 8, 2019.
